When should my child start 11+ preparation?
This is the question parents ask us most. The short answer: Year 4 is the ideal time to start, and Year 5 is the main preparation year.
Why not earlier?
In Year 3, the best preparation is not 11+ papers at all. It is reading every day, learning times tables and enjoying maths. Starting formal practice too early can make children tired of it before the year that really counts.
Year 4: the foundation year
Year 4 is the right time to build strong basics at a steady pace:
- Times tables and quick mental maths
- Wider vocabulary through reading
- A first look at verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Good habits: a weekly routine and homework done on time
Year 5: the main year
Most 11+ tests are sat in September of Year 6, so Year 5 is when children learn every question type, build speed, and practise in test conditions. Registration for the tests also happens in Year 5: March for Bexley, and between May and July for Kent, Sutton, Newstead Wood, St Olave's and QE Boys.
Is it too late to start in Year 5?
No. Many children start in Year 5 and do very well, especially if they read a lot and are confident with number. It simply means a busier year.
What about Year 6?
After the September tests, some schools hold Stage II tests or their own exams in the autumn, and independent schools test in the winter. These need extra work on creative writing, advanced maths and comprehension.
