The Latymer School 11+ Guide
The Latymer School in Edmonton, north London, is a mixed grammar school founded in 1624. Only children living in its admissions area can get a place. This guide explains the area, the tests, how places are given and how to prepare. We update it whenever the school changes its rules.
About the school
- A selective mixed grammar school (voluntary aided), ages 11 to 18.
- 192 Year 7 places.
Who can apply: the admissions area
Only children living in these postcodes are considered: E2, E4, E5, E8, E9, E17, EN1 to EN4, EN5 (sectors 1, 2, 4 and 5 only), EN8 (sectors 7, 8 and 9 only), N1 (not N1C) and N2 to N22. No postcode gets priority over another. Looked-after children do not need to live in the area.
Your address is checked on a set date in early January of Year 6.
Key dates for September 2027 entry
- School registration form: 17 March to 2 June 2026 (closed)
- Tests: 3, 4 or 5 September 2026 at the school
- Maths and verbal reasoning results: before the end of September 2026
- Final results including English: before the end of October 2026
- Council application closing date: 31 October 2026
- National Offer Day: 1 March 2027
Children now in Year 5: registration is likely to open in mid-March 2027.
The tests
All tests are on one day:
- Maths, 30 minutes, multiple choice (GL Assessment)
- Verbal reasoning, 30 minutes, multiple choice (GL Assessment)
- English, 60 minutes, set by the school: 30 minutes reading and questions, then 30 minutes of creative writing
Is there a Stage II?
Not a second test day, but there are two steps. Maths and verbal reasoning are marked first. Only the top 700 children have their English paper marked. The English score is then added and everyone is re-ranked.
How places are given
- Looked-after and previously looked-after children in the top 900
- Up to 20 places for children on Universal Credit or free school meals, in the top 900
- Up to 20 music places, for children in the top 700 (by audition)
- Other children living in the admissions area, in rank order
There is no sibling priority. The next 50 children go on the waiting list, kept until 31 December.
How to help your child prepare
- Short, fast papers: practise 30-minute timed Maths and verbal reasoning with answer sheets.
- Creative writing counts for the top 700. Practise planning and writing a strong story in 30 minutes.
- Reading and comprehension every week.
- Use the school's English specimen papers and GL Assessment's free materials.

We live just outside the area. Can we apply?
Children outside the area are not considered (unless looked-after). Check your postcode carefully.
What if my child is ill on test day?
Email the school as early as possible that morning. A late test is arranged.
