The tests
Stage 1 is the SET: multiple-choice English and Maths. Stage 2 is written English and Maths, shared with Wilson's and Wallington County. See our Sutton SET guide.
Scores and how places are given
Marks from both stages are combined. The school's FAQs say the SET English, SET Maths, second-stage English and second-stage Maths are weighted 2 : 2 : 3 : 3, with an age allowance. Boys with an education, health and care plan naming the school are admitted first. Then:
- Looked-after and previously looked-after boys
- Up to 10 pupil premium boys living in the priority postcodes
- 75 places for boys living in the priority postcodes, in score order
- All remaining places, in score order, from any postcode
The priority postcodes are SM1 to SM7, KT4, KT17, CR0 4 and CR4. Ties go to the nearer home. The waiting list runs until 31 December.
How to help your son prepare
- Put the time into English and Maths. There is no reasoning.
- The written second stage carries more weight, so practise full written answers and clear maths working.
- Also practise quick multiple-choice questions for the SET, using the free sample papers.
Common questions from parents
We live outside the priority postcodes. Can my son still get a place?
Yes. The places after the 75 priority places go by score from any address.
What if my son is ill on test day?
Follow the invitation email. A medical certificate is needed.
