The assessments
Written papers
The school's own papers: Maths (45 minutes), English (1 hour: reading questions and story writing) and Verbal Reasoning (30 minutes).
Interview and group activity
Many children are invited in January for an interview and a small-group activity.
How offers are made
Emanuel makes its own offers. Results are posted on Thursday 11 February 2027 and confirmed by email.
Scholarships and bursaries
- Scholarships: Academic, Music, Sport, Drama and Art.
- Means-tested bursaries up to 100%, which can also cover uniform and school meals.
How to help your child prepare
- English. Half the paper is story writing (continue a story). Practise reading questions and a 30-minute story.
- Maths. Cover all of Key Stage 2 and use the school's Maths topic list.
- Verbal reasoning. Practise word and code questions to time.
- Practice material: the school publishes an English sample paper, two Maths sample papers and a Maths topic list.
- Read every day. Wide reading builds the vocabulary and comprehension every entrance test needs.
- Interview. Help your child talk about their interests, the books they read and how they solved a problem. There is no need to learn answers by heart.
Common questions from parents
Does Emanuel use the ISEB pre-test?
No. It sets its own papers.
Can we apply to several schools?
Yes. Many families apply to a few independent schools and grammar schools. Watch the different registration deadlines.
