The 11+ journey: a simple timeline from Year 4 to offer day

The 11+ can feel like a maze. Here is the whole journey in order, so you always know what comes next. Dates are for children starting secondary school in September 2027 (in Year 6 now).

Year 4: build the basics

Year 4 is the best time to start. Children build times tables, reading, vocabulary and good weekly habits without pressure. Read more: When should my child start 11+ preparation?

Year 5: the main year

• Autumn to spring: learn every question type and build speed.
• Spring and summer: timed practice and mock exams. See 11+ mock exams: when to start.
• Register for the tests (this is separate from applying for a school):
  • Bexley: 1 to 31 March 2026 (no late registrations).
  • Sutton SET: 1 May to 31 July 2026.
  • Kent: 1 June to 1 July 2026.
• Decide about your address early if you are thinking of moving. See Moving house for a grammar school.

Year 6, September: test day

• Bexley: 2 to 10 September 2026.
• Kent: Thursday 10 September 2026 in Kent primary schools; 12 or 13 September for children from outside Kent.
• Sutton SET: 15 September 2026, then Sutton Grammar's second stage on 3 October 2026.

Year 6, October: results

Results come before you apply: Bexley in early October, Kent on Thursday 15 October 2026. Scores are age-standardised, so younger children are not at a disadvantage.

Year 6, autumn: apply on the CAF

You apply to your home council on the Common Application Form (CAF). London closes on 31 October 2026; Kent on Monday 2 November 2026. A pass does not guarantee a place, so rank schools carefully. Read: How to fill in the CAF.

Year 6, autumn and winter: independent schools

1 March 2027: National Offer Day

Your council tells you which school your child has been offered. 1 March 2027 is a Monday. Accept the place by the date in your letter, even if you plan to appeal or wait for a better school.

March to summer 2027: waiting lists and appeals

Your child stays on the waiting list for schools you ranked higher. You also have the right to appeal. Read: How to appeal for an 11+ grammar school place.
